Today in Science History

On May 19 in 1857, biochemist John Jacob Abel is born the son of a prosperous farmer in Cleveland. Abel invented the first artificial kidney (1912), but he is best known for his work on glandular secretions. In 1897 he was the first to isolate an active molecule from the adrenal medulla; he named this molecule "epinephrine," but it is more popularly known as "adrenaline." In 1925 Abel became the first to crystallize insulin.
