Program Overview
United Technologies is offering Connecticut high school science teachers the opportunity to
participate in a six-week summer program that will take place Monday, June 25 to Friday, Aug. 3
(6 weeks during the summer and 5 additional days spread throughout the 2012-2013 school year).
Teachers will be working full-time directly with UTC scientists at one of eight UTC
companies in Connecticut to strengthen their understanding of STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics) content and sharpen inquiry-based instructional strategies.
Under the mentorship of a UTC scientist, teachers will work on an actual engineering project,
learning the skills and processes used by scientists and engineers in their daily work.
Teachers will be supported through NSTA to translate these scientific practices into effective
classroom instruction to build students’ knowledge of STEM and increase their understanding of
the scientific inquiry process.
Program Incentives: A generous stipend ($6,000), access to scientists at Connecticut’s largest
private employer, a one year NSTA membership, and access to NSTA resources.
Potential UTC work site locations: Carrier—Farmington, Fire & Security—Farmington, Hamilton
Sundstrand—Windsor Locks, Otis—Farmington, UTC Power—South Windsor, Pratt &
Whitney—East Hartford, Sikorsky—Stratford, and UTRC—East Hartford
Program Information
Special Note: If selected to participate in the STEM Externship every attempt is made to minimize
distance traveled from home to assigned worksite. However, you are not guaranteed a placement in
close proximity to your home.
Eligibility
- Must be a certified teacher in the state of Connecticut
- Must be a contracted teacher in a Connecticut school district
- Must be currently teaching science or technology full-time in a Connecticut High School
- Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident with a valid Alien Registration Number (A-Number)
- Must have a valid passport and/or birth certificate
Teacher Requirements & Expectations
- Must comply with work day established by your assigned engineer
- Must comply with all security rules and guidelines of your assigned work site
- Must participate in all required tasks set by the program during the summer and the five days spread throughout the fall
Stipend
The stipend will be paid in three installments. 2 installments of $2,500 each paid by the middle of August and the final installment of $1,000 to be paid in the early fall.
