2018 STEM Teacher Ambassador

Sunny Mall
Homer High School
Homer, AK

Sunny MallAlison "Sunny" Mall has been an educator since before she started kindergarten! While waiting for her older sister to return home from school in Chugiak, Alaska, she would line up her stuffed animals in front of their shared chalkboard and spend the day running her very own classroom. As an adult, she answered her call to teach.

Sunny received her BA in Mathematics (minor in Spanish) and Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Alaska Anchorage and her Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction (emphasis in rural mathematics education) from the University of Louisville. Following three years as a mathematics teacher and teacher trainer in the US Peace Corps in Nepal, she taught high school mathematics for the Anchorage School District and trained secondary mathematics teachers at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Sunny currently serves as an Assistant Principal at Homer High School in Homer, Alaska, where she is lucky enough to also teach mathematics. She is a National Board Certified Adolescent and Young Adulthood mathematics teacher.

Sunny's goal is to instill in reluctant math learners a love of mathematics and a joy of learning. Her educational interests include patterning and reasoning, developing students' positive dispositions toward problem solving and applying mathematics in real-life situations.

In her free time, she enjoys exploring the beach with her approximately 3.14 nephews, riding around town on her Vespa motor scooters and mountain biking with her best friend, Bella, a Hungarian Vizsla from Rushford, Minnesota.
