Richard VelascoRichard Velasco has been teaching secondary mathematics at Lincoln Middle School and Pullman High School in Pullman, Washington since 2016. Prior to his current position, Velasco taught 6th grade mathematics for eight-and-a-half years at F.B. Leon Guerrero Middle School on Guam where he served in many leadership roles and local committees throughout the Guam Department of Education (GDOE). Velasco served as a content area leader for GDOE's Curriculum Leadership Team and has also conducted various professional development sessions as a content-area specialized teacher. He was also part of a team that helped revise Guam’s mathematics content-area standards before the Common Core State Standards were eventually adopted by the U.S. territory. On Guam, Velasco was also an adjunct instructor at the local university where he taught developmental mathematics.

Currently, Velasco is also pursuing a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, with a specialization in STEM Education, at Texas Tech University (TTU) via blended learning delivery. He is part of TTU's Global PRiSE (Pragmatic Researchers in STEM Education) program, and his interests of study include global collaborative STEM education and STEM education policy. He has presented his papers at various research conferences in Guam, the mainland United States, and the Republic of Georgia. He has also presented virtually in research conferences held in the United Kingdom and Japan. Recently, he has had articles published in the Pacific Journal of Education and Technology and Engineering Teacher, and serves as a reviewer for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics journal Mathematics Teacher.

In addition to receiving the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 2014, Velasco was also named a Who's Who Under 40 in the Government of Guam awardee in 2015 and GDOE's middle school teacher of the year in 2016.
