About NSTA

Professional Collaboration

Student Chapters

In addition to our state/province chapters, NSTA has over 100 student chapters. NSTA and the student chapters are separate but interdependent organizations that have elected to ally themselves to encourage professional development and networking of preservice teachers of science from across the United States and Canada. Student chapter participation offers opportunities for increased leadership skills, career growth, and networking for students and faculty. To form a student chapter at your local college or university, simply download the NSTA Student Chapter Procedures Guide (PDF) or e-mail the NSTA Chapter Relations Department.

NSTA Student Membership

Student membership in NSTA is available to preservice science education students whether or not they have an NSTA student chapter at their college or university.

To be eligible, you must be enrolled in an accredited college or university as a student with an interest in science education. Proof of student status (registration, class schedule, or professor verification) is required. Join online or download an application. Student membership may be upgraded to the new teacher membership upon graduation at the same reduced rate. Students must upgrade to individual membership status after six years.

For $34 per year, you will receive one of the NSTA journals of your choice, along with other great benefits. Multijournal rates are available. Learn more »

Preservice Member of the NSTA Preservice Teacher Preparation Committee

In addition to regular committee members, the Preservice Teacher Preparation Committee of the NSTA Board of Directors seeks candidates to serve a two-year term on the Preservice Teacher Preparation Committee. Nominees must be, in addition to several other criteria, highly qualified prospective elementary, middle school, or high school teachers who show promise of becoming excellent teachers of science. Purposes of this appointment include:

  • To engage a preservice teacher of science in the work of an NSTA Standing Committee;
  • To receive input from those directly affected by the preservice science teacher community;
  • To better engage preservice and early career teachers of science in NSTA activities;
  • To promote the professional development of preservice teachers of science and the appointed future teacher;
  • To support the development of current and future NSTA student members in the leadership activities of NSTA affairs.

Expectations for the candidate selected, NSTA support for the student, and additional information about the nomination and selection process are included in the Information and Nomination Packet. Though this is a two-year term, there are two appointees on the committee at any one time, in staggered terms, thus there is an appointment made each year. Nomination packets must be postmarked no later than the Friday before Thanksgiving each year. Please review the Information and Nomination Packet and if you have any additional questions, contact NSTA Chapter Relations.
