Prince George’s County Science Supervisor Joins Senior Leadership Team at National Science Teachers Association


Zipporah MillerArlington, Va.—October 7, 2008 — A respected leader in the Maryland education community has joined the senior management team of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). Zipporah Miller, former K–12 science supervisor and STEM coordinator for the Prince George’s County (MD) Public School District, is NSTA’s new associate executive director for professional programs and conferences.

Miller will lead the Association’s efforts in providing professional development and e-learning opportunities to teachers of science nationwide. She will directly oversee NSTA’s regional and national conferences, which draw more than 15,000 teachers annually; the NSTA Learning Center, an online portal where thousands of teachers pursue quality professional development resources and specific science content; and the NSTA New Science Teacher Academy for new middle and high school level science teachers.

“Zipporah brings a tremendous amount of knowledge and leadership to this position,“ said Dr. Francis Eberle, executive director, NSTA. “We are thrilled to have her on board to continue driving our efforts in providing high-quality professional development and resources to science educators and administrators nationwide.”

During her tenure with Prince George’s (PG) county schools, Miller managed the science office at the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and oversaw more than 150 district science coordinators. She was responsible for hiring science educators for the county schools, directing the science curriculum provided to students, providing staff training to PG teachers, and serving as the school system’s spokesperson on science education-related issues.

Miller also served the Prince George community as program administrator for the Howard B. Owens Science Center in Lanham, and as an adjunct professor at Towson University. She was an assistant principal in Capitol Heights, Maryland and taught science for more than eight years.

Miller holds a master’s degree in school administration and supervision from Bowie State University and a bachelor’s degree from Chadron State College.
