Teams of science educators-teachers and administrators (individuals also welcome)
Many schools are implementing Professional Learning Communities (PLC) to examine practice and ensure student learning. This session provides tools, models and strategies to focus PLCs on science content and science learning. Through a combination of plenary and breakout sessions, participants will learn:
- The key features of effective Professional Learning Communities
- (PLCs) for science teachers
- Tools and protocols PLCs can use to strengthen their focus on science learning
- A model for teacher collaboration focused on improving science lessons and gathering formative assessment information that can be used by PLCs
- How to use Science Curriculum Topic Study within PLCs
In addition participants will have the opportunity to:
- Engage in a simulation game on how to implement effective school-based professional development and build a learning community focused on science education
- Develop a plan for applying your learning in your own schools and districts
This institute is designed for science teacher leaders, department chairs, administrators, and teams of science teachers working in or starting PLCs.
Ticketed Sessions
(SC-1) Using Science Curriculum Topic Study in PLCs
This session will introduce a process for using science standards and research to study 147 science curricular topics. The process, called Curriculum Topic Study, can be used by PLCs to inform their examinations of student work, lesson design, and improvement, to analyze demonstration lessons and coaching sessions.
(SC-2) Building Systems for Quality Teaching and Learning: A Simulation on Designing and Providing Professional Development Programs in Science
In this session, participants will learn to create a school culture that is continuously providing professional development and helping all teachers to learn. The participants will play a simulation game that leads them to learn the steps needed to implement effective school-based professional development and build a learning community focused on effective science education.
