On March 15 in 1806, a chondrite meteor (laden with carbon and organiclike chemicals) is unequivocally identified for the first time, when it crashes to Earth outside Alais, France, at 5:30 in the afternoon. The chemical makeup of the meteor suggests it came from some planet or other in outer space that contains life. [from The Illustrated Almanac of Science, Technology, and Invention]
