Description:
Are you interested in making your science classroom more student-centered by focusing on inquiry-based experiences? Inquiry is a powerful way of learning and teaching. Immerse yourself in a day of inquiry! BSCS, known for the BSCS 5E Instructional Model and inquiry-based instructional materials, will take you through an inquiry experience based on this powerful instructional model.
First, presenters will engage you in the question: What is scientific inquiry? Second, they will facilitate activities that encourage you to explore and explain the abilities to do and understandings about scientific inquiry as presented in the National Science Education Standards. Next, they will help you elaborate ways in which inquiry can be used as a tool for teaching. Finally, they will provide you with an opportunity to reflect on and evaluate your own practice in light of what you have learned during the session. Through participation in the BSCS PDI strand, teachers and other leaders will experience many facets of the role inquiry plays in student learning and teacher professional development.
The National Research Council (NRC) released the National Science Education Standards (NSES) in 1996. A prominent feature of the NSES is a focus on inquiry. In 2000, the NRC released Inquiry and the National Science Education Standards. This resource will serve as a guide to draw connections between learning science, learning to do science, and learning about science. This institute will model and provide an understanding of what inquiry means for teaching and learning.
Inquiring into Inquiry is intended for anyone interested in learning more about scientific inquiry and how to help students learn through inquiry. Professional development that is a powerful learning experience for teachers should be designed so it incorporates the same elements that provide powerful learning for students. So, come prepared to actively engage in some powerful learning!
BSCS has been a leader in science education for 50 years: 1958–2008. Our current structure includes a center for research and evaluation, a center for curriculum development, and a center for professional development. Together, these three centers collaborate to bring you the best that science education has to offer. BSCS is your partner in transforming your science education program so that all students learn important science concepts.
