NSTA International Science Education Day
To connect science educators from various countries, NSTA holds annual international conferences in conjunction with its national conference
(2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009). Planning is currently underway for International Day 2010 at NSTA’s National Conference on Science Education in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 17–21 March 2010.
The International Day conference recognizes NSTA’s increased emphasis on international collaboration in science education. There are numerous opportunities for international visitors to network together with science educators from various cultures, including those from North America.
Activities for International Day 2010 will begin on Wednesday evening with a President's International Reception for all international visitors and invited guests. On Thursday, the day commences with a welcome ceremony and conference orientation, followed by a plenary talk by Dr. Rodger W. Bybee, Chair, PISA 2006 Science Expert Group, who will speak about global assessments and comparisons. This talk will be followed by concurrent sessions related to the conference theme, along with a full complement of papers presented in a poster session and a luncheon plenary speaker, Dr. Robin Millar, Chair of the Departmental Research Committee at the University of York, UK. Dr. Millar will speak about problems related to assessing what students really know. The day will conclude with a panel discussion with Dr. Bybee and Dr. Millar.
The ultimate goal of all NSTA international activities is to engage more American teachers of science in international opportunities with the intent that they will become better teachers in their own classrooms and better impart the global dimensions of science to their students.
