The Science Teacher

October 2012
Vol. 79 No. 7

We sometimes say students "can't see the forest for the trees." In a systems context, "forest" is an emergent property derived from a complex web of biotic and abiotic factors such as water, soil, growth, sunlight, and decay. To fully comprehend "forest" requires a holistic understanding of the dynamic interdependencies that together create the forest system. Systems are everywhere, from business markets to ant colonies. Students need to learn that unlike the simple cause-and-effect linear relationships typical in our lab courses, complex systems require new conceptual tools. Only by becoming systems thinkers will our students see both the forest and the trees.
