Qualifying nonprofit organizations such as primary and secondary schools, youth clubs, universities, optics centers, science centers, industry associations, and international optical societies are eligible. SPIE, an international membership society, serves scientists and engineers in industry, academia, and government, as well as companies producing leading-edge products. Its constituents work in a variety of fields employing some aspect of optics and photonics, the science and application of light. The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) is a Presidential Award established by the White House in 1995 to recognize U.S. citizens or permanent residents and U.S. organizations that have demonstrated excellence in mentoring individuals from groups that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and the workforce. Nominations, including self-nominations, are invited for Individual and Organizational PAESMEM awards. Individuals and organizations in all public and private sectors are eligible including industry, academia, primary and secondary education, military and government, nonprofit organizations, and foundations.
Nominations are encouraged from all geographical regions in the United States and its territories or possessions, particularly jurisdictions designated by Congress under NSF's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research. Each individual and organizational PAESMEM awardee will receive $10,000 and a commemorative Presidential certificate. Awardees are also invited to participate in an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., which includes meetings with STEM education, research, and policy leaders. [hide full description]

Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Citizen Science Network is hosting a contest this spring. Have you noticed any bird nests in your neighborhood? Peek in a hanging flower basket, a street light, a store sign, your barbecue grill, an old boot, or under a bridge. Birds build nests in the strangest places. Be creative and take a photo, create some artwork, shoot video, write a story or a poem, or create a sculpture. Show a bird’s nest built in some out-of-the-way or out-of-this-world place and submit your work online. The institute, Yellowstone National Park’s official partner in public education, is a nonprofit field school with a mission of preservation through education. Field seminars cover a wide array of topics, including wolf recovery, grizzly bear ecology, birding by sight and sound, wildflowers and medicinal herbs, animal tracking, nature photography, park history, and geology and thermal features.
Scholarships for courses starting after April 1 are available to teachers on a first-come, first-served basis, and fund 100% of tuition for field seminars up to a maximum of $500 per teacher per season. (Teachers are responsible for cabin fees, as well as meals, transportation to the park, and lodging if courses are not based at one of the institute's facilities. Applications will be reviewed and awarded on a rolling basis.)
Seminars are taught by college professors, research scientists, park staff, and other experts. Most last from one to four days and are limited to 13 participants. Some courses are available for credit through Colorado State University or Montana State University. [hide full description]

The World Science Festival is a production of the Science Festival Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization headquartered in New York City. The World Science Festival’s signature event is an annual celebration and exploration of science that launched in 2008. Brasenose College in the University of Oxford, Oxford, England, will host the annual International Conference on Education this summer. Fifteen years ago, a highly successful Round Table was specifically designed to explore education. You are encouraged to make a presentation and to provide a paper on a relevant aspect of the topic, however a paper/presentation is not required to attend. Papers presented at the Round Table may be subsequently submitted for publication in the Forum, a journal of the Oxford Round Table. Members of the Oxford Round Table have access to an array of academic, cultural, and social resources. A free afternoon and evening will be available on Tuesday for independent travel to London, Stratford-upon-Avon, Bath, Stonehenge, Salisbury, Cambridge, or many of the other cultural sights in England. At the Colorado School of Mines, K-12 teachers of all disciplines, administrators, counselors, and all librarians and museum curators will experience an intensive, yet fun, summer training course that provides a comprehensive overview of all phases of the minerals, aggregates, industrial minerals, and solid fuels industries. Approximately 80 authorities from industry, academia, private groups, and government will lecture on their respective fields of expertise, beginning with basic geology and plate tectonics, and continuing through geophysics, exploration, mining methods, metallurgical operations, metal applications, research, marketing, careers, economics, recycling, and environmental responsibility. Ten half- or-full days of classroom instruction are supported with a one-day geology trip plus “mini-trips” and eight full days of field trips to operating mines and associated plants in Colorado.
Some financial assistance is available for non-Colorado applicants who apply before April 1, 2013. Six hours of licensure/recertification credit are awarded for completion of the course. The $250 fee includes two nights of overnight lodging and some meals. Vernier will offer 25 full-day, hands-on training institutes to help science teachers nationwide integrate data-collection technology into their science curriculum. Teachers will work alongside a training specialist and use Vernier’s hardware and software technology to explore classroom-ready labs and activities. The six-hour institutes are designed to meet the needs of teachers from a wide variety of grade levels and STEM disciplines, including physics, chemistry, biology, environmental/Earth science, and middle school science education. In addition to the training, each participating teacher will receive a Workshop Training Manual on CD, a Vernier lab book, or $50 Vernier gift certificate, and more. The workshops also offer attendees the option of earning two (quarter) Graduate Science credit hours through the Portland State University Center for Science Education.
