The first draft of the Next Generation Science Standards is scheduled to be released today. This first draft of the new science standards will be online for public comment for three weeks, until June 1. The Next Generation Science Standards are based on the National Research Council (NRC) Framework for K–12 Science Education, which describes the major practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas that all students should be familiar with by the end of high school, and provides an outline of how these practices, concepts, and ideas should be developed across the grade levels. Science educators, supervisors, administrators—in fact all who are interested in the future course and direction of science education—are encouraged to carefully read these new science standards and submit comments online to Achieve during the comment period.

It’s safe to say that at 21 million barrels a day the U.S. is addicted to oil, but breaking that addiction can be fun. DoSomething.org is taking the best aspects of a fun game and baking it into the Week Without Oil campaign to educate and inspire teens to live one week without oil. Each day they’ll be issued a challenge that raises awareness around U.S. consumption of oil--whether it’s in the products we use or the practices we choose.

How It Works

1. Teens across the country sign up and declare publicly that they want to take the WEEK WITHOUT OIL Challenge. Immediately a challenge will be issued to recruit their friends to join.
2. For the rest of the week, teens will get a daily challenge. But here’s the catch: They must complete the previous day’s challenge to get a secret password, unlock the next challenge, and move on.
3. Teens complete the entire week and share their collective impact on the fight reducing the U.S. oil dependency.

Participants will be eligible to win scholarships and other prizes! Questions? E-mail wwo@dosomething.org.

The Institute for Earth Science Research and Education, in collaboration with Queens College/City University of New York, is seeking participants for summer professional development workshops in the second year of its Climate Science Research for Educators and Students project. Funded by the NASA Innovations in Climate Education program, this project seeks to improve student engagement in climate science by helping teachers and students develop authentic climate-related science research projects. The first workshop will focus on understanding sun/Earth/atmosphere interactions and Earth's radiative balance, a fundamental concept for climate science. All participants will build pyranometers, instruments for monitoring solar radiation. Some travel support may be available for participants from outside the New York City metropolitan area.

A follow-up workshop will take place in August. During the summer, participants are expected to conduct their own research.

PAIR is a pilot project of the American Physical Society to support high school physics teachers in need of content or material resources. This program will support up to 20 teacher-professional physicist teams to develop and implement new content-rich lessons in the high school classroom. A grant of up to $1,200 will be provided to each team to purchase classroom materials needed for the lessons. Additional travel support will also be provided to the team to share their project at a regional professional meeting.

High school physics teachers may apply; physics teachers who are teaching out of their content area (those with a biology or mathematics degree, for example) or those who work in schools with very limited materials resources will receive priority. A team must also include a professional physicist who would like to work closely with a high school physics teacher. Prior experience with schools or professional development is not required. Graduate students and postdoctoral students also may apply. The collaboration will require several face-to-face meetings, so the teacher and professional physicist should be within a comfortable driving distance.

The application will be available on the APS website by June 1, and completed applications will be due on September 15. Visit the website or e-mail Jacob Clark Blickenstaff if you have questions.

This summer, the physics department at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls will continue its decades-long tradition of offering high-quality, in-person physics courses for practicing teachers. Our courses have proven valuable both for teachers who are new to physics and are working toward getting licensed to teach it, as well as those who have been teaching the subject for many years. The courses typically feature a large variety of laboratory and hands-on activities that can be brought back to your own classrooms. This summer, UWRF is offering three courses: Electricity and Magnetism for Secondary School Teachers, 4 credits, June 18–July 6; Using Videos to Teach Physics, 2 credits, July 9–13; and  Parallels in Physics and Art, 2 credits, July 16–20.

Dorm housing is available. For course descriptions, tuition rates, and online applications, visit www.uwrf.edu/PHYS/Summer.cfm; call 715-425-3560; or e-mail Eileen.Korenic@uwrf.edu.
