Satellite technology allows geologists, meteorologists, and other scientists to acquire precise, up-to-date images that illustrate how the Earth changes from day to day and year to year. Recording environmental cycles, natural disasters, and human-made ecological effects, satellite images provide clues about the dynamic nature of our planet. Earth from Space, developed in collaboration with the Center for Earth and Planetary Studies at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, explains how satellite imagery is gathered and used to expand our understanding of life on Earth. This exhibit also contains a powerful selection of images showing recent events such as the tsunami-devastated regions of the Pacific.

The Tyco Electronics Foundation, the charitable arm of Tyco Electronics Corporation, provides extensive funding for projects that enhance learning opportunities for students. In addition to a matching-gifts program for employee contributions to accredited high schools, the foundation makes direct grants for programs that address a business or community concern of Tyco Electronics. Organizations (public or private) that support precollege math and science education receive special attention.

Tyco focuses its support on communities--especially Pennsylvania and North Carolina--where it operates. Past projects have included wiring schools with fiber-optic cables to allow rapid internet connections. Although the foundation makes funding decisions on a quarterly basis (December 15, March 15, June 15, or September 15), it gives the majority of its grants in the first quarter of the year. Therefore, the best time to send in requests is ahead of the December 15 quarterly deadline.

This student experiment design challenge, geared toward grades 5-8, gives students a hands-on opportunity to design an experiment or simple demonstration that could be performed both in the classroom and aboard the International Space Station. Winning experiments will have observably different results when the experiments are performed in the "1-gravity" or "1-g" environment of the classroom, compared to when the experiments are performed by astronauts in the "Micro-g" (one-millionth of 1-g) environment of the space station. The apparatus for the demonstration must be constructed using materials from a tool kit provided to the astronauts on board the space station. The kit consists of materials commonly found in the classroom and used for science demonstrations.

The 10 regional winners, one national winner, and one national runner-up winner will have their experiments conducted by the astronauts on board the space station in the April-May 2010 timeframe. Proposals may be submitted via e-mail or postal mail now through February 19.

The website has a series of six video modules to help student experimenter design teams develop their experiments. Hosted by NASA Educator Nathan Lang and NASA Astronaut and former International Space Station Commander Mike Fincke, these brief video modules discuss the ISS and microgravity, considerations for designing a microgravity experiment, the scientific method, and a recap of the Kids In Micro-g! Design Challenge. Bonus videos of microgravity demonstrations onboard the ISS from Fincke and fellow station astronauts Greg Chamitoff and Nicole Stott during their past missions are also included. A matrix of frequently asked questions has also been added as a reference. The FAQ list will be updated weekly as new questions arrive and are answered.

Sponsored by Penn State Lehigh Valley and the Pennsylvania Department of Education, this international field course is one part of an ongoing professional development program called CHANCE. The course—titled Environmental Science and Conservation Biology—will immerse the participant—either a biology or science major, or a high school preservice or inservice science teacher—in the biodiversity of select Costa Rican habitats using an experiential learning approach. The course will also focus on the conservation and research programs of selected non-governmental organizations, including the Organization of Tropical Studies (La Selva), Carribbean Conservation Corporation (Tortuguero), and The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (Panama). Special emphasis will be placed on how humans have impacted the biodiversity of the environments studied, and their sustainability. Participants will also experience the biogeography, culture, politics, economics, and history of this region.

Participants will do hands-on conservation activities and conduct research with academics, field scientists, and conservation biologists associated with the organizations mentioned above. To prepare for the intense practicum in Costa Rica and Panama, everyone must complete online assignments over a two-month period throughout the spring semester. Submission of all field assignments and required post-trip reflections/activities will be due following return to the United States.

Participants can earn undergraduate or graduate credits; high school teachers can gain professional development ACT 48 hours (120) or four graduate credits in environmental science and ecology. Science teachers from across the United States and Canada are encouraged to apply.

Goldstone Apple Valley Radio Telescope Program (GAVRT) is an education partnership involving NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Lewis Center for Educational Research. The program is a K–12 project using radio astronomy to provide an opportunity for students to experience real science and to learn that science is an ongoing process and actual discovery is possible. To bring the GAVRT program into the classroom, teachers must attend a five-day class. Teacher training classes take place at the Lewis Center in California. The program strongly recommends that at least two teachers attend the training from each school or area. While this is not a requirement, it will definitely help in program support once back in the classroom.

This 24-hour live worldwide forum on topics for, by, and about current and future generations of women in engineering and technology will feature the theme "Launching Tomorrow." At any and all times during the period, a “conversation” will take place somewhere in the world on issues for, by, and about women in engineering and technology. The marathon is a combination of live internet chats, webcasts, teleconferences, and prerecorded sessions, and all are accessible to a worldwide audience. The National Engineers Week Foundation created the marathon and is the headquarters and facilitator. Six global regions each have their own leaders and presenters, and scheduling follows the sun in 4-hour blocks: North America, Latin/South America, China, India, Africa, and UK/Europe. The marathon is an outgrowth of an Engineers Week program called Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, which occurs in February. The marathon is being held to coincide with Women’s History Month (March) and International Women’s Day (March 8, 2010).
