Excite students about the STEM subjects through this annual competition, which is designed to be run locally by schools, colleges, Scouts, YMCA, Boys & Girls Clubs, and other youth groups. Its goal is to give kids the unique educational experience of building and launching a solid-fuel powered model rocket. Local hosts choose an American Astronaut to honor with their launch. Each competitor receives a rocket kit to build and keep; supplies for two launches; a full-color Certificate of Achievement with a quote from the first Teacher-in-Space, Christa McAuliffe; and artwork of astronaut and moonwalker, Alan Bean--plus registration in the national competition.
The competition has four levels: ages 10 to 14; 10 to 18; 10 to adult; and Collegiate Challenge. The competitor whose rocket lands (by parachute) closest (average of 2 launches) to an on-field target wins the local event. Local winners' results are entered into the national competition. Six national winners celebrate at the Astronaut Hall of Fame and Kennedy Space Center--Visitor Complex in Cape Canaveral, Florida, or at Space Camp and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
