August is Tree Check Month. Teach kids that super heroes aren’t just in comic books. It’s time to set aside a few minutes to help save trees in your backyard or local park that could be at risk from a devastating pest called the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB). Since its arrival in the United States in 1996, the ALB has led to the loss of more than 80,000 trees. It feeds on certain species of hardwood trees including Maple, Ash, Birch, and Elm.

The good news is that anyone can help in the effort to stop this beetle. The ALB is devastating to trees but harmless to people. To encourage children to become a tree hero, have them enjoy the outdoors and participate in The ALB Hunt. Use the ALB Hunt video and two worksheets that will teach kids how to identify the kinds of trees that are at risk from the ALB, as well as the signs that a tree has been infested. All of the materials are free for educators to download.

Each year, Envirothon gives U.S. and Canadian student teams a chance to become familiar with North America's natural resources and compete for scholarships by demonstrating their knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management. The 2013 North American Environthon will take place in August in Bozeman, Montana. The competition is centered on four universal testing categories (i.e., soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, and wildlife) and a current environmental issue (this year, it is Sustainable Rangeland Management).

The Envirothon program is an educational tool that can supplement environmental education both inside and outside the classroom. Led by a volunteer advisor, teams usually meet from late autumn until spring. Teams work collaboratively to develop their knowledge of ecology and natural resource management and to practice their environmental problem-solving skills in preparation for Envirothon competitions.

This course is designed for both new and experienced AP Environmental science instructors teaching the course in Fall 2013. Because this interdisciplinary course incorporates elements from biology, chemistry, geology, and natural resource management, the laboratory component will focus on how to integrate and connect these areas by developing the student’s quantitative analysis and lab skills. Our field/lab investigations will stress analysis through first-hand studies of Maine’s rocky intertidal ecosystem, water quality analysis, bioassays, soil analysis, and environmental modeling. It will address the basic course elements of effective course pacing, assessment, and active student engagement, as it focuses on the central role of the laboratory in the curriculum. The latest exam will be discussed, as well as the creation of effective essays which challenge students to integrate and connect course topics.

Schoodic Education and Research Center (SERC) campus in Acadia National Park offers Advanced Placement Summer Institutes. The park provides a unique setting for intense work with other teachers and institute instructors. Participating teachers will have accommodations on the SERC campus at Schoodic Point, Maine.

Designed for teachers who have taught AP Chemistry at least three years or have attended a previous weeklong AP Chemistry summer institute, this workshop will assume that teachers have confident control of existing AP Chemistry topics, with little time allowed for delivery of content (except for new topics). The course will emphasize the new AP course re-design in 2013-2014, including the new Chemistry Frameworks, the Inquiry-based Lab Manual, and the proposed changes to the AP exam. Participants will evaluate the new experiments in the highly anticipated College Board lab manual and will work at transforming existing favorite labs to inquiry-based labs. The group will evaluate the actual 2013 tests and the 2013 Practice Exam in the new format to prepare to help students succeed on the 2014 exam. Finally, the group will plan to revise the AP Chemistry audit reports, as required of all AP Chemistry teachers by early 2014.

The park provides a unique setting for intense work with other teachers and institute instructors. There are accommodations for participating teachers on the SERC campus at Schoodic Point, Maine, surrounded by spruce and fir forests and the Atlantic Ocean.
The redesigned AP chemistry program will be in effect for the 2013-2014 school year. The new course focuses on reasoning and inquiry skills that are essential for success at the college level. The revised course emphasizes inquiry-based labs that are more student-directed and centers on a more conceptual, qualitative understanding of chemistry with less breadth and more depth. The Institute is supports new AP teachers as they design their courses to address this new curriculum framework. Teachers will examine and become familiar with the curriculum components and practice the “guided inquiry” approach to lab work. Experiments from the newly released AP lab manual will be performed. Design and designing strategies for modifying “cookbook” labs will be another important focus of this summer institute. Time will be devoted to working on the new practice test and to redesigning questions to be more in line with conceptual objectives. The session will examine a classroom approach to inquiry where emphasis is placed on developing critical thinking and analysis outside of the laboratory setting. Activities that include formative assessment, group discussion and presentation, and prediction will be discussed and practiced. Some time will be devoted to creating a syllabus that reflects the requirements of the new course.

K-12 classrooms are invited to sign up for Journey North's annual global study of wildlife migration and seasonal change. A free internet-based citizen science project, Journey North enables students to monitor migration patterns of monarch butterflies, hummingbirds, whooping cranes, and other animals; the blooming of plants; and changing sunlight, temperatures, and other signs of the seasons. Each study features many entry points and resources that address learning standards: reading booklets and lessons, photos and video clips, weekly migration updates, interactive maps, instructional units, and compelling migration “stories.”

Fall tracking will begin in September. Journey North now has a free mobile app: See www.learner.org/jnorth/mobile/index.html for details.

The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) and Coursera are teaming up to provide online courses for science teachers. "Genetics and Society: A Course for Educators" explores the social, legal, and ethical issues of modern-day genetics. Informed by the recently released Next Generation Science Standards, the 4-week course provides an overview of recent genetic discoveries and molecular lab techniques. Participants will acquire an understanding of the science and technology behind breakthroughs such as therapeutic cloning and the sequencing of the human genome. You will also have the opportunity to discuss and debate issues surrounding hot-button topics in genetics: If it is ethical to clone your dog, will humans be next? Should we care if our food is genetically modified? What are the pros and cons of gene therapy? Course participants will bring their understanding of modern genetics and associated ethical issues - along with content resources, discussion questions, and assignments - into their own teaching.

The NASA Galileo Educator Network (GEN), a professional development (PD) program in astronomy and space science, is accepting applications for an institute this fall. The Institute takes place at the Orlando Science Center in Florida. Geared toward teacher leaders, teacher educators, and PD providers, participants become NASA Galileo Educator Fellows after completing the 15-hour Institute. This GEN Institute emphasizes the integration of science content, science practices, and the nature of science as outlined in the national Framework for K–12 Science Education. Goals include preparing participants to deliver their own GEN PD to assist teachers with the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards, in the context of astronomy and space science. Participants will explore:

  • Classroom-tested, standards-based, and Galileo-themed astronomy investigations
  • How students learn science
  • Astronomy teaching resources
  • NASA-developed and NASA-supported resources and science content
  • How to adapt existing astronomy resources and activities to emphasize science practices and to include reflection on the nature of science
