On the Front Lines of Schools is the latest chapter in a series of reports that represent the critical voices in the dropout debate: students, parents, and now, teachers. The report identifies "expectation gaps" and the need for more support at home as major factors in the rising tide of high school dropouts. The study gives voice to hundreds of educators, including teachers, principals, superintendents, and school board members. This webinar will allow even more educators and education experts to weigh in on this debate.

Middle school educators are invited to join NASA for the International Space Station EarthKAM Summer 2009 Mission. Find out more about this opportunity that allows students to take pictures of Earth from a digital camera on board the International Space Station.

ISS EarthKAM is a NASA-sponsored project that provides stunning, high-quality photographs of Earth taken from the space shuttle and International Space Station. Since 1996, ISS EarthKAM students have taken thousands of photographs of Earth by using the web to direct a digital camera on select spaceflights and, currently, on the International Space Station.

For more information about the project and to register for the upcoming mission, visit the ISS EarthKAM Home Page. If you have questions about the EarthKAM project,  e-mail ek-help@earthkam.ucsd.edu.

Issues like population dynamics, resource use, and human impact on the environment may seem too complex for the early elementary classroom. Yet even very young students may be helped to understand these concepts by drawing on personal experiences and by interacting with one another while guided by their teachers and parents. In this hands-on workshop, the trainer begins with an overview of concepts and learning strategies in environmental education that are appropriate for the K-3 classroom. Participants will then engage in hands-on activities that promote students' environmental awareness and interest, while also building skills in reading, number sense, problem solving, social interaction and cooperation, listening, role playing, and more. Register by July 24.

While students are becoming proficient in a language, hands-on activities can enhance their verbal skills, especially when the activity content is relevant to their lives. In this hands-on/minds-on workshop, participants will engage in activities illustrating the connections between people's lives and the ecosystems supporting us. The activities explore issues of global population dynamics; conservation of natural resources; resource distribution around the globe; education and gender equity; and ways individuals contribute to a healthy community. Techniques employed include role-playing simulations, cooperative learning group problem-solving, and concept mapping for multiple learning styles. A variety of new vocabulary words will be incorporated.
All activities include Ideas for Cultural Understanding to help teachers facilitate the activities. Includes CD-ROM, Teaching Population: Hands-On Activities, containing more than 50 activities. Register by July 24.
