EdSteps, currently under development by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), will be a resource for teaching and assessment. Its centerpiece will be a large, public library of student work samples in five key skill areas that are typically difficult and costly to assess. For each skill area, student work will be presented in a continuum—a gradual progression—from emerging to accomplished work. The EdSteps continuums will allow teachers, parents, and students themselves to measure individual students’ progress over time and answer questions about whether students are on track to success.

EdSteps is currently collecting work in Writing and Global Competence and will be collecting other types of work in the months to come. EdSteps is explicitly seeking student work from science classrooms—from preschool to 12th grade—to ensure that the student work continuums reflect the work taking place in science courses. Teachers who upload work samples are eligible to win $150 gift cards.

NSTA is bringing back the series What Research Says to the Science Teacher. The original series, published in the 1980s, was popular among science teachers because it synthesized research and offered practical suggestions for how to apply research in the classroom. The publications will be relatively short (15–20 pages), will offer research-based suggestions, and will be reviewed by teachers before they are published to ensure relevancy and readability. More importantly, the contents and themes of the books will be selected by the NSTA community.

To identify pertinent What Research Says book topics,we're asking members of the NSTA community to spend 10–15 minutes selecting and ranking your 10 most important topics from a list of 25. We’ll conduct a Rasch analysis of the survey returns and will report on the results and the top 10 selected topics in a future article in NSTA Reports. Please participate in our survey by following this link.

The mission of the Minority Innovation Challenges Institute, or MICI, is to create a virtual training ground where minority undergraduate students learn how to compete in NASA technical challenges for both prestige and significant cash prizes. For the kickoff event, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden will deliver a welcome message for the program that includes an inspirational explanation of how he started as an undergraduate student majoring in electrical engineering and built an impressive career path that led to his becoming the 12th administrator in NASA's history. Administrator Bolden's message will be followed by a live presentation from MICI organizers.

Immediately following the kickoff event will be a live presentation starting at 3 p.m. EDT from Julie Clift at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Clift will explain how students and faculty can get involved in the NASA University Student Launch Initiative. The entire month of September within MICI will be focused on this particular challenge and will feature weekly presentations on the subject.

MICI provides a yea-round virtual conference platform where students from across the country can participate in free interactive educational sessions of their choosing. Many of the sessions will focus on competitions found within NASA's Centennial Challenges program, which provides cash prizes ranging from $50,000 to $2 million.

Recently, NSTA unveiled its Strategic Goals 2010 document online. This comprehensive plan will help guide the association’s efforts for the next five years. A year-long, multiphase project developed to reflect the changes in science education, Strategic Goals 2010 is the successor to Strategy 2005.

At 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time, members of the Strategic Goals 2010 Task Force will lead a special interactive web seminar about the document and the future direction of the association. NSTA members and those with a vested interest in NSTA are encouraged to participate. In this web seminar, members of the task force will explain the background, purpose, and development process of the new 2010 strategic goals. Discussion of each of the four goals will describe how each addresses current issues in science education and how NSTA’s current and future initiatives will achieve these goals. During a question-and-answer session, members of the task force will answer any questions you may have about the document.

To submit questions for the q & a portion of the web seminar, e-mail strategicgoals2010@nsta.org. Please include your name, where you are from, and your question in the body of the e-mail.
