Earthwatch will be offering fully funded fellowships to K-12 teachers across the United States this summer. These expeditions allow teachers of all school subjects, without any field experience required, to be awarded travel during their summer break, while helping scientists conduct important environmental research. Teacher fellowships typically include a travel stipend, too. As an educator fellow, you'll spend 1-2 weeks on an Earthwatch expedition alongside other teachers led by prominent field researchers. You will develop your skills and understanding around environmental concerns so that you are better able to pass on that knowledge to your students.

Nearly 50 teachers will be selected and placed in teams with 7-9 other educators. The projects you will participate on are Spotting Songbirds in the Rockies (July 19-27 and August 3-11, 2013) and Climate Change and Caterpillars in Arizona (July 28-August 7).

Teachers with questions about the Earthwatch Educator Fellowship programs can e-mail fellowshipawards@earthwatch.org or call 800-776-0188. Download the 2013 expedition guide at https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/2013-earthwatch-research-expedition/id569625403?mt=11. Earthwatch hopes to announce all awards by May 1.

Northeast Foundation for Children, developer of the research-based Responsive Classroom approach to elementary education will sponsor of the 2013 Annual Bammy Awards. Presented by the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences International, the Awards is a cross-discipline honor recognizing individuals throughout the education field. The Academy hosts the Awards to identify, recognize, and celebrate what's right in American education—from teachers, principals and superintendents to school nurses, support staff, advocates, researchers, early childhood specialists, education journalists, school facilities maintenance staff, special needs professionals, school board members, education professors, parents, and more. The awards program was created in response to national pressure on educators and education leaders to improve student outcomes and the intense scrutiny that today's educators face as a result. The Awards accept nominations from the public, selects nominees for awards, and holds a red-carpet event that brings together constituents from the entire education community to recognize the honorees. Two honors, the Educator's Voice Award and the Bammy Award, will be presented in every category. Educator's Voice Award honorees are selected by popular online vote and will be announced in June. Bammy Award honorees are selected by members of the Academy and will be announced at the red carpet event Sept. 21 in Washington, D.C., at the Arena Stage Theater.

Millions of people in the United States have undetected vision problems and eye diseases. Healthy Vision Month brings attention to the importance of early detection and treatment of eye diseases and encourages all Americans to get dilated eye exams—one of the easiest and most important things people can do to protect their vision. Celebrate Healthy Vision Month by raising awareness among your students about the importance of taking care of their eyes. Below are some ideas:

• Hold in-class eye health quizzes and challenges using the fun facts, puzzles, and activities featured in NEI’s free activity books and fun fact calendars. Distribute these materials to students.
• Invite a local eye care professional to talk to your class about eye health.
• Assign a scavenger hunt that will require students to explore the NEI website to find answers.
• Let students show off their creative side with an eye-focused art project. Ask students to draw pictures of eyes—their eyes, their friends’ eyes, the eyes of their pets or favorite animals, etc. For a chance to see students’ pictures displayed on NEI’s children’s website, you can scan and e-mail the images to cnaron@hagersharp.com. National Wildflower Week is the perfect time to visit a botanic garden or park where you can see spring blooms of the native variety. With hundreds of public gardens throughout the country, there is sure to be one near you. An increasing number of them have sections devoted to wildflowers and native plants, and all public gardens offer important information about the plant world and how it benefits other species—like us! Wildflowers add beauty to the landscape, help conserve water, reduce mowing costs, provide habitat for birds, butterflies and other wildlife, protect the soil and save money on fertilizer and pesticides.

Enjoy spring wildflowers with these resources:

• For a state-by-state list of botanic gardens to visit, go to www.wildflower.org/reciprocal.
• You can also visit a sanctuary, local, state or national park to view wildflowers. Go to www.wildflower.org and www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/index.shtml in the spring for lists of wildflower sightings along roadways you travel.
• Want your own display? Add wildflowers to your backyard or along roadways and driveways. Explore plants native to your area at www.wildflower.org/explore and get tips for avoiding some of common wildflower-growing mistakes at www.wildflower.org/feature/?id=90.

Need even more reason to get outside and enjoy wildflowers? Check out NEEF’s Children & Nature infographic to learn how being active in nature makes kids healthier. The infographic is freely available for download and sharing at www.neefusa.org/health/infographic.

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are due to be released this spring. NSTA is a partner in the NGSS development process and has been providing guidance and input to the writers and lead states. NGSS is based on A Framework for K–12 Science Education developed by the National Research Council in 2011. The Framework combines three important dimensions: core disciplinary ideas, scientific and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. This web seminar is one in a series of seven that explore the crosscutting concepts to provide K-12 teachers with strategies for implementing NGSS in the classroom. The web seminar focuses on the crosscutting concept of Stability and Change. For natural and built systems alike, conditions of stability and determinants of rates of change or evolution of a system are critical elements of study. This web seminar takes place 6:30–8 p.m. Eastern Time.

JOIDES will explore how global climate change, tectonics, and sedimentation are revealed in the Gulf of Alaska. The education program will focus on this exploration, the very nature and process of science, and careers. Since March 2009, live ship-to-shore conferences from the JOIDES Resolution (the JR, the nation's scientific ocean drilling ship) have inspired more than 10,000 students, teachers, and museum visitors. Our live video events will lift science out of the textbooks and allow students to learn about cutting edge research and careers by talking directly to scientists, technicians, and crew as they live and work aboard the vessel. Requests for interactive, 30-45-minute Skype chats are handled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The son of a retired NASA astronaut who lived on the International Space Station makes his dreams of traveling to outer space come true when he competes to win a seat on the next space shuttle in this real-life look into the world of Space Camp. Space Warriors, a Hallmark Channel Original World Television Premiere, will air at 8 p.m. Eastern Time/Pacific Time; 7 p.m. Central Time.

Jimmy Hawkins has lived and breathed astrophysics his entire life and as a result, possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of the field. So when the opportunity to compete and win a seat on the next space shuttle arises, he secretly applies despite his father’s, retired NASA astronaut Capt. Andy Hawkin, and mother's reservations. When Jimmy secures the final spot to attend the special space camp at the Space & Rocket Center, which is run by former astronaut Col. Roy Manley, he joins an elite team of teens called The Warriors who must test their skills against a strong but devious opposition, The Titans. Just as the competition is ending, and The Warriors are feeling defeated, an urgent crisis occurs aboard the International Space Station. It will be up to these kids to solve the problem and save the lives of the astronauts and cosmonauts some 200 miles from Earth. Using their skills and abilities to work as a team, The Warriors hatch a brilliant plan.

An experienced, nationally-recognized modeler takes participants through several “modeling cycles” in hands-on/minds-on experiences. Working closely with colleagues, participants practice teaching students to reason from data and to develop, modify, and deploy scientific models. Early-, mid-, and late-career teachers typically find modeling to be a seminal approach that influences their practice throughout their careers.

Developed at Arizona State University in the mid-1990s, modeling instruction is an inquiry-based, hands-on teaching method in which students design experiments, collect data, and develop concepts and models; deploy these concepts and models to solve problems;  discard common naïve concepts; and demonstrate superior performance on standardized tests. In 2000, the U.S. Department of Education recognized Modeling Instruction as one of seven exemplary programs nationwide. In 2001, it designated Modeling Instruction as one of only two exemplary programs.

Early registration is recommended. A registration form can be found at www.clearviewregional.edu/highschool/Departments/Science/tabid/131/Default.aspx. Lodging is available at an additional cost.

This seminar provides an opportunity to explore what a growing number of educators have identified as a deeply felt imperative: to support "irresistibly engaging" learning that genuinely prepares young people for the challenges presented by this unprecedented time in human history.

Several AP labs will be included in the activities performed, and an introduction to statistical methods for hypothesis testing will also be covered. Tips and techniques on classroom management, assessment, and engagement will be taught throughout the week, and all participants receive lesson plans for teaching cell biology plus 40 hours of Continuing Education Credits.
