The National Center for Earth and Space Science Education, the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Space Education, and NanoRacks announce Mission 5 to the International Space Station (ISS). This STEM education opportunity immerses students across a community in research, with the ability to design and propose real experiments to fly in low Earth orbit on the ISS. Each participating community will have a microgravity research minilaboratory capable of supporting a single experiment, and all launch services to fly it to the ISS in Spring 2014. A 9-week experiment design competition in each community, September 9–November 11, allows student teams to design and formally propose real experiments vying for their community's reserved minilaboratory on the ISS. Content resources for teachers and students support foundational instruction on science in microgravity and experimental design. Schools and districts should inquire now and move forward with their implementation plan.

In collaboration with other museums and units of the Smithsonian, the Professional Development Center works to create and deliver week-long professional development for teachers of science. The SSEAT courses were started in 2005 to bridge the gap between formal and informal science education by combining training for science content and pedagogy with behind the scenes experiences at a wide variety of Smithsonian units, Smithsonian Affiliate partners, inquiry-based STC/ STCMS curriculum, and world-class science research facilities throughout the Washington, DC, area.
Understanding issues of the nature and evolution of biodiversity is key to the survival of life on this planet. The Biodiversity Academy consists of a series of unique experiences designed to introduce teachers to the variety of life and enhance teacher understanding of concepts related to biodiversity. Participants will engage in hands-on content sessions by interacting with scientist, curators, and museum educators.

NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission is sponsoring workshops for educators. The LRO has allowed scientists to measure the coldest known place in the solar system, map the surface of the Moon in unprecedented detail and accuracy, find evidence of recent lunar geologic activity, characterize the radiation environment around the Moon and its potential effects on future lunar explorers, and more. Workshop participants will learn about these and other recent discoveries, reinforce their understanding of lunar science concepts, gain tools to help address common student misconceptions about the Moon, interact with lunar scientists and engineers, work with LRO data, and learn how to bring these data and information to their students using hands-on activities aligned with National Science Education Standards and Benchmarks.

Workshops will take place June 24-28 and July 8-12 at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to tour the LRO Mission Operation Center and the Goddard spacecraft testing facilities. Each workshop will be limited to 25 participants. Qualified applicants will be accepted in the order they apply.

Staff Development for Educators, one of the nation's providers of professional development for educators, announces its 13th annual conference in Las Vegas, which will offer kindergarten teachers strategies, techniques, tips, and ideas for becoming more effective educators—all in an environment that is upbeat, fun, and full of excitement. One heavily requested topic is understanding and meeting the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS), a set of mostly uniform academic standards that are replacing disparate state standards in 46 states. The sessions will offer strategies for meeting the new standards and activities for covering CCSS content. And many of the conference's solid core of academic sessions will include relevant CCSS considerations. There will also be more sessions related to integrating classroom technology into instruction, including ample introductory sessions, tech-made-easy sessions for the non-techie, and a lot more hands-on learning. In keeping with tradition, the Conference will feature nationally known authors, musicians, and early childhood educators.

The new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) pose a formidable challenge for educators who will need to teach to them in the near future. To meet this need, Staff Development for Educators (SDE) will offer the PreK-1 Educators CCSS Academy in Chicago. Educational leaders, seasoned classroom teachers, renowned speakers, and award-winning authors will fully prepare pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade educators to teach to the new standards for an entire year. Throughout the Academy, every participant will work within SDE's CCSS Action Planner to walk through five steps for developing and applying instructional design and strategies that are centered on the CCSS. Attendees will leave the Academy fully prepared to tackle the CCSS and equipped to apply instructional design strategies to all future challenges. Although there are currently no CCSS for pre-kindergarten, PreK educators will learn how to prepare their students for the rigors of the new kindergarten standards.

Global climate change will impact the lives of all inhabitants of our planet and is a key issue taught in our classrooms. This academy looks at change from the perspective of the history of Earth from its formation through the origin of life. Topics will include planetary processes, volcanism and plate tectonics, the oceans, and atmosphere. Each day, participants will engage Earth scientists at the Smithsonian and elsewhere in hands-on content sessions that take them behind the scenes and explore current research on our planet's past environments.
