Expand your subject-area knowledge and your teaching toolkit through field-based study at College of the Atlantic. Classes combine fieldwork, lab, or studio sessions with lecture and discussions led by knowledgeable and accessible faculty members. Daily field trips take place in Acadia National Park, on the Maine coast, and at the college's scenic ocean-side campus. Registrations will be taken on a space-available basis through June.

The 2013 Energy Conference for Educators, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, brings together educators from around the country who are passionate about bringing energy education to their classrooms. In five interactive days, the conference provides teachers with the most up-to-date information on all aspects of energy including the science of energy, sources of energy, transportation, consumption, electricity, efficiency, and environmental and economic impacts. Participants receive the training and materials to implement innovative hands-on energy units for their classrooms, multi-disciplinary teams, and after-school programs. They also receive the materials, training, and support to conduct in-services in their areas to introduce the National Energy Education Development (NEED) program to others. NEED leaders at the conference help participants develop specialized unites that meet state standards and can be used with students of all learning styles. [hide full description]

The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN, or MAVEN, mission will explore the planet’s upper atmosphere, ionosphere, and interactions with the solar wind. Set to launch in November 2013, the mission will provide invaluable insights into the history of Mars’ atmosphere and climate, liquid water, and planetary habitability. Join the MAVEN education team for a one-day workshop on the MAVEN mission and the accompanying program for grades 3-5, Red Planet: Read, Write Explore! This program features six standards-based lessons that combine science, literacy, and art to help students understand planetary habitability and the MAVEN mission. The workshop will introduce participants to these lessons and concepts.
The workshop also will have a session devoted to Spanish-speaking English Language Learner and English as a Second Language students. Attendees will receive free classroom materials. The workshop will take place in Los Angeles, California. Applications are due July 24, 2013, but space is limited, so interested educators are encouraged to apply early. [hide full description]
