Why do humans and animals look and act the way they do? It's all about DNA. Learn how Purdue scientists are studying the building blocks of life. This electronic field trip starts with a look at how researching genetic combinations in mice teaches us more about human life. And a fish geneticist takes viewers to Alaska, an aquaculture farm, and live to her lab as she tries to determine why certain fish travel the globe. Then get ready to use your scientific inquiry skills to help Purdue wildlife geneticists track tiger salamanders to find out more about the heredity of this species.

Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. Participants count birds anywhere for as little or as long as they wish during the four-day period. They tally the highest number of birds of each species seen together at any one time. To report their counts, they fill out an online checklist at the Great Backyard Bird Count website.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is led by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, with Canadian partner Bird Studies Canada and sponsorship from Wild Birds Unlimited.

The Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse will offer a three-week National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Institute July 9–27, 2012. This learning experience for K-12 teachers will explore how Native Americans and Euro-Americans have adapted to the Upper Mississippi River Valley over the past 13,500 years, and how archaeology leads to an understanding of how human cultures change and adapt through time. Teachers will experience a one-day excavation session, field trips to archaeological sites, hands-on laboratory and workshop activities, demonstrations, and classroom activities. Walking beside thousand-year-old burial mounds, flaking raw stone into tools, learning how potsherds tell us about human behavior, understanding how humans adapt to complex, ever-changing environments--the institute will feature all this and more.

Individual projects will help participants tailor the content to their own teaching areas. NEH Summer Scholars receive a $2,700 stipend to help offset their expenses. For an application form and other information, click here. The deadline for applications is March 1, 2012.
