AWS Unit 2: The Rise and Fall of Daylight Hours
Introduction
The length of daylight hours varies with the latitude where the observations are made and with the seasons. Comparisons of the times of sunrise and sunset at different seasons and latitudes can be made by calculating, tabulating, and graphing.
Objective
To apply mathematics to the collected data in order to quantify the changes in the amount of daylight hours that the students are experiencing. Tables, calculations, and graphs are used.
Materials
- Weather reports from newspapers
- Graph paper
- Compasses for drawing circles
- Protractors
- Pencil and paper
- Crayons
- Sunrise-sunset charts from an ephemeris or almanac
