The boat continued on to Floreana Island, where we see evidence of human habitation. Darwin noted that the islands had been visited by a number of adventurers. First it was visited by pirates, later by whalers, and populated by Ecuadorian prisoners in a small prison colony that was established in the 1800s by the Ecuadorian government. Floreana is the home to the famous Post Office Barrel where visitors can reenact the ancient sailors’ mail delivery system.
