We visited both Isabela Island and Fernandina Island. The lava fields on Fernandina spread out from the volcano summit down to the edge of the ocean. The most fantastic sight on Fernandina was more black marine iguanas than could be counted, which lined the lava rocks basking in the morning sun. It was obvious that on both of these islands, eruptions had taken place taken place rather recently. On Isabela, we even saw a small jet of smoke curling from one of the great craters.
