NSTA life member Jerrold William Maben passed away on Friday, October 2, 2009, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire science educators well into the future.
Maben embodied the true spirit of NSTA, working to promote science teaching at all levels. He was the K–12 Science Coordinator for the Danbury Public Schools, Science Education Chair and Assistant Dean of Academic Standards at CUNY’s Lehman College, Program Director with the National Science Foundation, and taught at various universities throughout his career. Among his many other accomplishments, Maben was a published author, a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the Ohio Academy of Sciences, and a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Connecticut Science Supervisors Association.
Maben understood the value of working with science educators at all levels and the importance of science to our society. It’s with immense gratitude that the NSTA Board recognizes that his estate requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the National Science Teachers Association. As a member of NSTA since 1951, he will be remembered fondly by the NSTA community. To read more, see the story in the Greenwich Time.
