Trek inside for great lessons! Open Wide and Trek Inside is a primary curriculum from the National Institutes of Health. Through it, students in grades 1-2 will understand major concepts of oral health and engage in interesting, inquiry-based science activities.
Integration of science, language arts, health, decision-making, mathematics, and computer-based technology makes this unit very inviting to students and teachers. Six lessons are correlated to the National Science Education Standards for content, teaching, and assessment. They can be taught in sequence or individually to support other materials.
Along with the lesson plans, reproducible pages are provided in English and in Spanish. Take-home activities and letters to parents about the content studied in the module are also included.
The developers of this module definitely knew the time constraints on the classroom teacher! Each individual lesson provides the teacher with an overview, objectives, and background information about the content. Teachers will be able to prepare the activities in advance with little effort. There are also built-in assessment tools that will help teachers keep track of students’ progress.
One of the greatest features of this module is the CD-ROM that comes with it. This CD-ROM includes mini-documentaries, animations, and interactive activities. The graphics are easy to understand, and the directions are simple enough for students to follow without supervision. I was very impressed by this curriculum, and I look forward to the release of more modules in the future.
