Global Environmental Problems: Implications for U.S. Policy is a guide and activity book for high schools. Produced by the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University, this short book will both challenge and stimulate students to consider important issues. The excellent teacher guide is also available to help teachers implement the program.

This 2003 publication is part of the Institute’s “Choices for the 21st Century Education Program.” It provides lesson guides and student worksheets for a one-week (50-minute per day) unit that covers global warming, ozone depletion, water pollution, deforestation/desertification, and biodiversity. The reading level will be high for averge secondary classes, so teachers should be prepared to support students with lots of vocabulary practice as they work through this valuable resource.

It would be hard to find another treatment of environmental policy, written with such clarity and balance, that is so affordable. Teachers who discuss policy issues as they help students through environmental readings will find this a valuable resource.
