This NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book combines the fascination of a Cretaceous monster with the adventure of a scientist's quest. Young students will stretch to read it again and again. Paleontologist Paul Sereno and his team traveled to Niger in search of dinosaur bones. Instead, they uncovered the remains of a giant dinosaur-eating crocodile. Readers learn about this amazing creature and the environment in which it lived. The methods of paleontologists and preparators (who carefully clean fossils with air tools) will help students understand the nature of this science.
Early elementary readers will sail past terms like predator and species with the help of great supporting photographs, diagrams, and a good glossary. An index and references help this book to become a bridge between simple text and a resource for deeper study. Images like Serrano's team members using their bodies to recreate the size and shape of "Super Croc" will help young paleontologists imagine the impact of this creature. This is definitely a book that will be read again and again.
