The subhead of this gorgeous book promises "Ear-Tickling Poems" and "Eye-Tricking Photos." Readers will love the content, which will nourish both the right and left brains of listeners and readers--it's science for every intelligence.
It's rare that a book of poetry earns an NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book award, and this one is well-deserved. The lyric text that describes each camouflaged animal is ideal for reading aloud. Readers will especially enjoy being asked to find the animal within a magnificent photograph of its natural habitat. Opening the folded page reveals the animal, and then detailed information is provided about the animal's adaptations and lifestyle, which can be used to inform the teacher or provide enriched reading for students who explore further.
The authors don't sacrifice accuracy for rhyme or rhythm. A stalking weasel hidden by snow, or a hunkering flounder in the mud, represents not just a feast for the reader's imagination but an opportunity to discuss adaptations. This book will be treasured in any K-8 life science classroom.
