Through an engaging text and beautiful illustrations, readers learn about the life cycle of butterflies and many more interesting facts about these colorful insects. This small book has lyric text in large, clear type for elementary readers. The text wraps around detailed, labeled diagrams that include common species that children will recognize. Insets show scales, body parts, eggs, and larvae. Symbiotic relationships with ants will fascinate children.
This book is ideal for oral reading, then placement at a center where caterpillars might undergo metamorphosis. The tiny, labeled corner diagrams will pull students back to the book again and again for details they missed the first time around. Because there is no special glossary of terms or extensions, children will be challenged to extend their inevitable interest in this NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book by searching the internet or the world around.
