Readers meet George Washington, a thoughtful farmer who delighted in experiments with plants, tools, and new methods of farming at his home in Mt. Vernon, Virginia, in this NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book for 2009. It provides an ideal path for integrating science and social studies as teachers reinforce the fact that thoughtful citizens often use the methods and logic of science in their daily lives.
Washington believed that many successful farmers would help America grow into a stronger nation. This picture book is rich in primary sources such as letters and diary entries; it provides accurate maps and paintings from a historical point of view. Elementary and middle school students will not only enjoy reading it but will be encouraged to explore further, both into the primary sources that are mentioned and into the scientific inquiries of other historic figures.
