The milkweed plant is the food supply for the Monarch butterfly as it migrates across North America. The life cycles of these two species are closely related as the seasons change.

While reading simple factual narratives and viewing colorful illustrations, young readers can make observations of change over time. Inquiry is built into the text and flows naturally from the content. Because there are so many activities (including online "citizen science" activities) that involve the Monarch butterfly, this topic is an especially valuable one. This book was an NSTA/CBC outstanding science trade book winner for 2009.
