The beauty and wonder of nature is captured in this book about the formation of snow crystals. Ink drawings and magnified photographs show exquisite six-sided objects that are typically hidden in their clustering. From stars and plates to cylinders and lacy composites, the diverse complexity of snow will lure young readers to observe more carefully. The relationship between water chemistry, the water cycle, and geometry can support many interdisciplinary lessons. There's even a simple activity that follows the reading.
I loved this book! What a wonderful combination of art and science. The explanations are thorough, yet simply stated. The photos/illustrations are exceptional. I can just imagine a group of little snow scientists with their magnifying glasses out during the next snowfall. I heartily commend this book for middle grade lessons in the water cycle or properties of matter. This book would be appropriate for earlier grades as well to encourage careful observation skills. Outstanding art and simple yet accurate text made this book an NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book for 2010.
