Did you know that octopuses are among the smartest animals in the ocean? Students are fascinated with the amazing variety of unusual animals in our world, including the octopus. I can’t wait to use this book with my younger students in a whole–group setting.
The book is outstanding because of its dramatic photography—up–close so that children will easily see what the text is explaining. Eye–catching, large photographs on each page illustrate the content as the author concisely explains the clownfish’s physical properties and behaviors. There is an interesting discussion of how the female takes care of her eggs.
The book includes a glossary of science–specific vocabulary, an index, and an activity to create a sea urchin. In addition to the striking photography in the book, I also appreciated the internet resources provided by AV2. The media–enhanced book supports active learning. By entering the special code found in the book, teachers can gain access to enriched and enhanced content that supplements and complements the book. Content includes video, audio, embedded web links, quizzes, a slide show, and activities. The website works with all interactive whiteboards. The book’s interest level is for Grades 2–4 and has a reading level of second grade. The reinforced library binding is another plus.
