The books in this series' texts invite the young reader to “Come and explore some of the animal world’s yuckiest behaviors. Get ready to be grossed out!” Our first grade granddaughter did—and was.
Close–up color photos are presented throughout. Measurements are in English and (SI/metric), new vocabulary is highlighted within the text and defined at the bottom of the page as well as in a brief glossary. There is also an index. A few references are also listed for a student to read more independently.
These science trade books could be used to teach literacy and perhaps motivate a reluctant reader, but are not suitable for all students. A single pathfinder–type, Internet site (Fact Hound) is included to find additional information related to this book which requires a 13 digit numerical access code. Navigating this site for the first time required some patience on my part. I submitted a request for additional guidance, via my email address, and am waiting for a response.
The emphasis of these books is clearly on factual science content and they do not lend themselves easily for developing science process skills. If used under the direction of a skilled teacher within a balanced science program of content AND process, they could be a more useful tool.
