Open the door to possibilities by introducing early readers to careers in a variety of fields through the new Heinemann–Raintree "Jobs if You Like…" series. Each text focuses on a concept that generates interest at an early age, such as science or animals. Ten jobs associated with that particular field are featured. Highlighting individual careers within broad areas fosters dreams and provides a glimpse of the future.
In this book Charlotte Guillain begins with a probing question: “Do you learn about science at school?” This sets the stage for career exploration involving an array of science topics and emphasizing the importance of education. Professionals are featured in each occupation, from the doctor performing surgery and the pharmacist examining medicines to the environmental scientist adorned in scuba gear taking water samples and the sports scientist helping athletes train. Jobs ranged from the depths of the ocean as the marine biologist studied sharks or tracked turtles to the outer reaches of space as the pilots and astronauts soared. The extremely broad topic of science was narrowed to a sampling of careers across the spectrum, allowing the reader to envision what could be waiting for them.
Each book in this series culminates with the goal of helping the reader choose the right job based on individual interests and skills needed for them. The goal is to think about what each person enjoys doing. A two–page chart follows this career exploration recommendation. It lists each occupation, what essential skills are needed, and a positive comment about each one. For example the food scientist, “needs to enjoy eating and tasting food!” The photography is abundant and draws the reader into the hands–on work accomplished on a daily basis by amazing individuals.
