Research Rocks is one in a series of five on Earth science topics. This book expands on the topics begun in the Marveling at Minerals volume in this series. The writing is clear and age appropriate. The text material is formatted in a way that highlights the key points of content. The color photos on every page highlight and support the ideas. All of the books in this series are formatted in a similar fashion. However, the structure works exceptionally well with this volume. Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rock structures and examples are all covered.
The text on each page fights tightly with the selected photos. Each photo is also captioned and these captions take the reader just a bit further into the topic. The last chapter is about the rock cycle. This is the only chapter that does not cover the topic with good depth. It does serve to tie together the key ideas but did not clearly explain the cycle.
Following the glossary there is a list of resources to go further. These added resources are well–curated examples of materials that would expand the ideas presented. For the class studying a unit on rocks and minerals or for the individual nonfiction library, this book is an excellent addition for 3rd through 5th grade students.
