Young children have a natural love affair with books, but it is difficult to find nonfiction, science–themed books that tap that strong interest. This series addresses that gap with five titles for the preschool and early elementary age group. The scientific process starts with questions and these books encourage children to observe, compare, and classify while learning about sound, animal, plant, and measurement concepts.

"How Tall Was Milton?" is a cute fairy tale that introduces young children to the concept of standard units of measurement. A king challenges his subjects to find a way to measure the local giant. Although several of the townspeople are convinced their method of measurement will win them the promised box of gold, all of their methods have flaws.

The simple sentence structure and brightly colored illustrations will engage preschool children as a read–aloud and encourage science literacy for beginning readers. The suggested activities at the end of the book further reinforce the importance of standard units of measurement.
