One of every four kinds of plants or animals on Earth is a beetle! Their amazing diversity is easy to appreciate in this book for children. From the big, double–page spread near the beginning which shows twelve very different variations of beetle structure, the reader will be fascinated. The next spread shows the traits that make a beetle what it is and its anatomy. The rest of the book stresses the adaptations that enable the species to thrive in such different environments.

This NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book is a perfect introduction to not only beetles but classification and adaptations. Even though the captions on these hundreds of illustrations may include some vocabulary and ideas that would stretch an elementary enthusiast's skills, the great attention to detail will support the extra effort needed to appreciate the reading. There's no upper limit to its interest level; high school students will be equally fascinated. The actual size of each beetle is included. The younger user will move from the illustration to the minimal text rather than beginning with traditional reading. An appendix gives formal names and locations for each of the illustrations.
