Good engineering and complex science concepts are interwoven in this science fiction tale set in the not–to–distant future. Scientific practices such as weather control are presented in an entertaining novel that never goes beyond what would be reasonably possible based on what we know today. That's why this NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book is also a good resource for discussing the practices of science as described by the New Generation Science Standards.

There are scary descriptions of storm scenes like tornadoes that might be excerpted to provide motivational reading during a classroom unit on meteorology. The novel also deals with challenging social interactions between peers and between family members. It will be a comfortable read for middle or secondary students, and a great starting point for a discussion of what is science and what is fiction.
