"I want a snake," Omar said. And the story begins. Interwoven in this readable tale about young people and their families are both lessons in zoology and humane treatment of animals. It's a book that will not only keep young people interested, but challenge their values.

The balanced and thoughtful treatment of the issue of an exotic pet makes this NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book an excellent choice for guided reading at the middle elementary level. Omar gets his snake, and all the problems that come with it—caring for the animal, keeping it secure, and dealing with the reactions of others. Ultimately he must make an ethical decision. Readers will benefit by thinking along with Omar about all the issues raised in this excellent and quite readable story.
