Five hundred thousand years ago, a young male Homo erectus staggered, fell, and ultimately died of what we now believe was tuberculosis. Paintings from Egyptian tombs show the ravages of the disease. Today the bacterium still persists, plaguing populations around the world with its virulence and bacterial resistance.

This secondary level NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book describes centuries of investigation into the cause and potential cures for TB. Potential problems like "supergerm" evolution in prisons and special populations provide modern examples of the challenges that researchers face. Even though the topic is sobering this is a fascinating book for secondary students to read or for teachers to excerpt to illustrate the patterns of science.
