This is a sweet and simple version of an important story told through clear language and wonderful photographs. Much of the story of a young boy's efforts to save two seal pups is told from the seals' perspective. Miles and his friends are "seal sitters" who help protect these young mammals from interference from humans in Seattle, Washington and other areas. The language of this NSTA/CBC Outstanding Trade Book is ideal to read aloud from kindergarten up.

The story relates being a citizen scientist to real ecological issues, explaining how humans can observe and protect wild animals without interfering with their habitats or their natural behaviors. It would provide a great introduction for a class that might want to look for volunteer Citizen Scientist activities in their own community.
