In order to adequately chronicle an extraordinary life, it takes an extraordinary book. Students will be introduced to Sylvia Earle through an engaging story of her fascination with the ocean and her efforts to spend as much time there as possible.

Like many biographies for elementary students, the book begins with Sylvia's childhood in New Jersey. The eloquent descriptions of her love for observing nature will inspire would–be scientists no matter how far they might be from the ocean. So few students today get the chance to be "very still and for a very long time—waiting and watching to see what was going on in the pond, or under a fallen tree in the woods." The gift of a pair of swim goggles at 12 produced a lifelong passion for the sea.

Like Sylvia herself, this book attempts to draw attention to the fact that the Earth’s ocean is largely unexplored. Double–page illustrations of coral reefs and ocean depths invite readers to ask questions and dive farther. The author makes the point that the ocean’s health is crucial to the well–being of the planet and those who inhabit it on both land and in water. This was an NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book.
