This beautifully illustrated story of a baby seahorse’s amazing life beneath the waves offers information about unique adaptations and a rich vocabulary in a way that is comprehensible to young readers. Each sentence or two of text is supported by full–page illustrations ideal for sharing. Those are just a few of the reasons this book was named an NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book.

A tiny, fascinating fish adapted for a sessile life in sea grass, the seahorse changes color to fit in with his surroundings. Specially modified dorsal and pectoral fins keep it upright. His lizard–like eyes can look in two directions at once, providing protection from predators. Pairs of seahorses mate for life, and the male incubates the offspring. Each adaptation provides an advantage for this threatened species.

Students will not only reach for the new terms (defined in a short glossary) but use the illustrations to answer their inevitable questions of "how" and "why" this fish succeeds. The illustrations’ soft edges, gentle colors, and filtered light give them a visual charm beyond their value in providing information. Young readers will love this book which is full of science terms and stretch their reading skills to follow the seahorse again and again.
