Beautiful photographs tell the true story of how an orphaned moon (Asiatic Black) bear was rescued by scientists after poachers separated him from his mother. It describes the work of two scientists, who were careful to make sure he remained wild so he could eventually be returned to his natural habitat.

This NSTA/CBC Outstanding Trade Book will be easy reading for elementary students who will be captivated by the story. Large photographs support the text; there won't be any reluctant readers here. The book's description of the work of two Russian scientists, who spent more than 2000 hours re–introducing the cub to the wild can help students understand the importance of habitat. A teacher might also share the book as part of a theme of animal care; the important lessons on respect for both the animal and its natural instincts are clear.
