Using the analogy of a patchwork quilt as a common thread throughout, the authors of this NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book emphasize the beauty and mystery of nature. The book is perfect for primary curricula; it begins by defining habitat and explaining the interdependence of plants and animals.

Earth’s major habitats are beautifully woven in and illustrated within every page of this book. Concepts of biodiversity, adaptations, and respect for our ecosystems are presented through simple language and images that are displayed in various patchwork quilt designs. The content is developmentally appropriate and easy to match to the Next Generation Science Standards and almost all state guidelines for that level.

Each page is complex, prompting students to look again and again. One spread illustrates famous "Earth heroes"—environmentalists that advanced students might want to investigate. The author ends with tips for the teacher to integrate the reading not only with science but with art and mathematics (symmetry and geometry). There are also extension activities to build language and art skills and websites to explore.
