Everyone has stepped in scat like the lead character in this guide to inquiring in nature. The "ick" factor may attract some who don't consider themselves scientists at first, but what follows in this NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book is what will keep most readers "tracking" for a long time. The title and the awesome book cover are two of the immediate hooks for young children. Much of the text is lyric poetry, with large illustrations of the character and his dog to share. Detailed descriptions of the animals whose scat has been identified supplement that text.

The story provides a very different way to look at and compare animals. Looking at animal track as well as scat is very engaging. The format is wonderful; a combination of literacy and informational text. A child can be engaged in the story then use the factual information for a more formal learning activity. Students can use the book as a guide, since the scat that's illustrated will be found in most school environments. They could also use the detailed illustrations and the text as the basis for creating food chains.
