The author uses elegant language to describe these creatures and the environment they live in. Children will be drawn in by the description and illustrations in this NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book.

Like the author's previous award–winning book about the Arctic, this description of survival in extreme conditions has a wide range of uses and will appeal to readers of many levels. The illustrations help stretch the readability of the text, and the strong science can serve as a foundation for a deeper understanding of ecosystems or evolution. The book is equally appropriate for individual reading or as a class reference. It can also provide a teacher or mentor with many unusual examples that can add interest or color to content in this area.
