Efforts in textbooks to introduce diverse achievements in science and engineering often fall short; the same names, the same brief descriptions. This narrative story for elementary students provides a true story with rich social dimension to describe an engineering success in Malawi. It places invention in an interesting social context for children.

William Kamkwanba helps bring electricity and running water to his village by piecing together wind generators. His achievement doesn't just inform but grabs the hearts of young readers in this NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book. Today William is a student in the United States, studying to be an engineer. His story will inspire many other would–be engineers.

There are many activities on wind generation in textbooks and on the web; this is the ideal literature link to help students understand why such projects are important. A double–page spread of William piecing together spare parts and even junk that he has found to make his first "electric wind" machine will inspire inventors around the world.
