This fascinating picture book is laden with information about an amazing variety of eggs, including those of both common and unusual species of birds, insects, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. The shape, color, size, unique characteristics, and quantities of eggs of various animals are detailed.

There are levels of text—from almost poetic summaries and "big questions" that might provide writing prompts to specific captions for the drawings. The extraordinary, life-like illustrations enhance the text. This NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book for 2009 could serve many ages well. It could be read aloud to primary students, sitting by an incubator at an elementary classroom's "Life Cycles" center, or it could be circulated to motivate reluctant readers in the upper grades. It will also provide teachers with many great excerpts to share when the curriculum includes classification, adaptations, or reproductive strategies.
