A girl and her mother discover the magic and science of monarch butterfly migration in this NSTA/CBC award–winning trade book. A map and a detailed description of monarch behavior supplements the lyric text and exquisite soft illustrations. This book invites a reader to share the protagonist's excitement and curiosity.

The "constructivist" questions that mother poses as the pair seek out the "butterfly tree" provide a good model for many other dialogues about natural history. Readers will never look at the world outside in the same way again after they accompany these observers on their scientific field trip. This book won't provide all the biology that a butterfly enthusiast would need, but will make it almost impossible for readers to leave the topic once they are entranced by the text. It can also become a bridge to student journalism: "Have you ever discovered something amazing in nature?"
