Both weather and climate are explored in this creative book with ingenious graphics and pop–out illustrations. Young eyes attuned to hyperlinks will follow the connections between sun and winds, microclimates and biomes, again and again. The 3–dimensional pop–out illustrations include manipulative pull–outs like ships moving through currents, air balloons, and reveal secrets from historical journals to survival gear. There are even problem–solving interactives like the full page diagram of a large weather system that asks students to predict the weather in various locations and then confirm their predictions with pull–outs.

This NSTA/CBC Outstanding Trade Book is full of great information that will fascinate both young and middle level readers. They will return to it again and again to re–investigate ideas they observe or hear about. Because the book is fragile, though, with its pop–outs and pull–out inquiry problems, it's more of a book for individual exploration than an adventure for an entire class.
