NSTA’s Shell Science Lab Challenge: Prizes

  • Schools compete in one of 18 regional competitions. (Regions are aligned with the 18 NSTA Districts).
  • Each regional winner school wins a $3,000 science lab prize package that includes:
    • Designation as an "NSTA/Shell Science Lab Challenge Regional Winner," school banner, and trophy;
    • $1,000 in donated science lab equipment/materials/gift certificates;
    • $1,000 Shell Science Lab grant to purchase science/lab equipment and science education resource books;
    • $300 gift certificate to the NSTA Bookstore;
    • One year NSTA membership for two teachers;
    • NSTA Learning Center subscription for two teachers; and
    • Paid registration for two teachers to attend a 2013 NSTA Area Conference on Science Education.

National Finalists

  • 18 regional winner schools compete in the national finals;
  • Top five National Finalist schools win their regional prizes plus an additional $5,500 science lab prize package (total: $8,500) that includes:
    • Designation as an "NSTA/Shell Science Lab Challenge National Finalist," school banner, and trophy;
    • An additional $2,000 in donated science lab equipment/materials/gift certificates;
    • An additional $2,000 Shell Science Lab grant to purchase science/lab equipment and science education resource books; and
    • Expense-paid trip for one teacher to attend the 2013 NSTA National Conference on Science Education.

Grand Prize Winner

  • In addition to their regional and national finalist prizes, the Grand Prize Winner school receives an additional $11,500 science lab prize package (total: $20,000) that includes:
    • Designation as an "NSTA/Shell Science Lab Challenge Grand Prize Winner," school banner, and trophy;
    • An additional $5,000 in donated science lab equipment/materials/gift certificates;
    • An additional $5,000 Shell Science Lab grant to purchase science/lab equipment and science education resource books;
    • Expense-paid trip for a second teacher from the school to attend the 2013 NSTA National Conference on Science Education and a chance to present a professional development session on their Shell Science Lab Challenge winning entry.
