NGSS promotes the need to engage students in scientific reasoning and argumentation; this goal has not sprung from a uniquely new initiative, but is based on years of cognitive research into how to educate a scientifically literate society. It is vital to engage students into observations and to encourage them to evaluate what they see and what they think about what they see by having them construct explanations and explaining these explanations to viable peer groups and authentic audiences. This chapter is an excellent foundation for pre-service use and for ongoing PDI sessions within all levels of education, especially those focusing on grades 3-12. The historical foundations and the examples cited support what used to be called writing across the curriculum. Arguments for emphasis on students creating models and communicating their understanding of these scientific models through discussions and writing are explicit and offer great strategies for guiding students toward using evidence and reasoning in their scientific writings. This chapter and others within the book are excellent resources for current research on core curriculum and NGSS standards.
