Chronicles of Courage: Women Airforce Service Pilots--STEM Lesson for Grades 7-12

"The WASPs," is one of 20 short videos in the series Chronicles of Courage: Stories of Wartime and Innovation. With millions of men serving overseas during World War II, women are offered jobs that had never been available to them before—including in aviation. More than 1,100 women are selected to become Women Airforce Service Pilots, or WASPs. Under the direction of Jacqueline Cochran, the WASPs fly military planes and take on a wide range of missions—some dangerous—and all crucial to the war effort.

This inquiry lesson accompanies the video to enable students to explore various concepts related to target practice strategies used by WASPs during WWII:
  • ballistics
  • trajectory
  • deflection shooting
  • gravity
  • projectile
  • momentum
  • speed
  • drag
  • velocity
The lesson features a timeline with discussion questions, and hands-on activity, writing prompts, and more.
